Memorial Box

I built this cherry box to hold the remains (ashes in a plastic box) of a friend that passed away last year. I wanted to make something special in his honor.

The main box is cherry with mitered corners. I put splines (bloodwood) on the corners. They make a nice decorative accent but they are also structural. I lined the bottom of the box with felt similar to a jewelry box.

The most interesting characteristic of this box is the lid. As you can see it’s recessed into the interior of the box. The core of the lid is 1/2″ plywood. I veneered it with Satinwood and wrapped it in a bloodwood frame. The lid’s handle also has a small accent of Satinwood, just scroll through the photographs to see the details of the lid.
